  17.                            What Is NuSound?
  18.   - NuSound replaces the DOS bell (beep) with real digitized
  19.      sounds, played through your PC's internal speaker (no extra
  20.      hardware required).
  21.   - In the 'advanced' mode, NuSound will replace ANY sound made
  22.      by your DOS programs with the digitized sound of your choice.
  23.      NuSound is the ONLY sound program with this feature!
  24.   - You may also play the sounds from within your batch files or
  25.      from the command line.
  26.   - NuSound gives you a library of more than 25, high-quality,
  27.      digitized sounds and words.  These sounds are in the .WAV
  28.      format so you can use them in Windows 3.1 too.
  29.   - NuSound plays Microsoft Windows .WAV sounds in DOS. You get an
  30.      easy-to-use point-and-shoot program to view and hear the sounds.
  31.   - NuSound works on just about any PC - from 486's down to
  32.      8088-based XT's (which are largely ignored by other sound
  33.      players)!

  36.   and existing software - with NO EXTRA HARDWARE NEEDED!

  39.                             About NuSound
  40.   Since the introduction of the IBM PC and compatibles, the sound
  41.   circuitry provided with these machines has been universally
  42.   panned - and rightfully so.  The designers of the original PC
  43.   obviously did not put much emphasis on the quality reproduction
  44.   of sound. The result is that for years we have been subjected to
  45.   the infamous BIOS 'beep' - a raucous, obnoxious tone lasting
  46.   nearly a full second in duration!
  47.        Meanwhile, users of the Apple Macintosh were treated with a
  48.   little more respect.  The Mac allows the user to change the
  49.   audible warning tone to one of several different sounds - thus
  50.   allowing customization and even a little fun.
  51.        And now - for the first time on a PC (drum roll please...) -
  52.   Baggs Technologies presents NuSound (otherwise known as "The End
  53.   of the Obnoxious Beep").  NuSound lets you replace the standard
  54.   DOS 'beep' with a variety of other sounds.  Baggs Technologies 
  55.   has been a leader in the field of sound reproduction on personal 
  56.   and home computers (anyone remember the Commodore 64?) and we 
  57.   have endowed NuSound with our latest breakthrough technology.  
  58.   NuSound plays real digitized sounds through your PC's internal 
  59.   speaker - without any extra hardware!

  62.                             Using NuSound
  63.   INSTALLING NUSOUND: OK, you're probably eager to plunge right
  64.   in and say goodbye to those awful beeps, rattles, and buzzes!
  65.   Just make a directory for nusound.com and associated sound files 
  66.   (they have a '.wav' extension). Call it, say, NUSOUND.  Copy all 
  67.   NuSound files into this directory. Change into this directory and 
  68.   type the following line:
  69.                  NUSOUND /R
  70.   You should see the message acknowledging that NuSound is
  71.   installed (the default sound is a 'boing'). That's it!  NuSound
  72.   will now intercept any DOS 'beeps' and replace them with the new
  73.   sound. You will probably want to add the following lines to your
  74.   autoexec.bat file so that NuSound is installed automatically
  75.   every time you boot up (assuming your NuSound directory is
  76.   C:\NUSOUND):
  77.                  CD C:\NUSOUND
  78.                  NUSOUND /R
  79.   You can also playback the sound any time by pressing the hot-key,
  80.   <Alt-S>, so you don't need to wait for a program to generate a
  81.   beep.  When used as above, NuSound is a TSR (Terminate and Stay 
  82.   Resident) program that will remain in your PC's memory (until you
  83.   reboot) intercepting the BIOS beep and replacing it with the digitized
  84.   sound you choose.

  87.                            NuSound Options
  88.   Right about now you've probably installed NuSound, hit the hot-
  89.   key a few times for amusement, and you're wondering things like
  90.   "How do I choose another sound?", and "What if I want to replace
  91.   the other obnoxious sounds that some programs generate - sounds
  92.   that obviously aren't the DOS beep?". We'll answer these
  93.   questions and other mysteries of the universe right now.
  94.        You can invoke NuSound with various options with the
  95.   following command:
  96.        NUSOUND [FILENAME] [/A] [/A2] [/R] [S:n] [V:n] [/?] [/Q] [/U]

  98.   OPTIONS:
  99.   [FILENAME]
  100.        NuSound will play the sound
  101.        specified by FILENAME (type
  102.        the full name and extension).
  103.        Example:
  104.              NUSOUND TONE.WAV
  105.        If the sound file is in a directory
  106.        other than the current one, type
  107.        the drive letter and full path for
  108.        the sound file.
  109.        Example:
  110.              NUSOUND C:\NUSOUND\TONE.WAV
  111.   /A   Advanced mode - replace all
  112.        sounds.  Some programs generate
  113.        their  own sounds, bypassing the
  114.        standard 'beep'.  To get NuSound
  115.        to intercept these types of
  116.        sounds, use this option.  NOTE:
  117.        Test your programs first when
  118.        using this option to ensure
  119.        everything works OK.  This
  120.        option plays some heavy hardware
  121.        'tricks' with your PC - not for
  122.        the sqeamish!  However, we have
  123.        tested this option and found it
  124.        to be compatible with most
  125.        popular PC software.
  126.        NOTE: Not recommended for XT's and
  127.        slower PC's. Works best with 20Mhz
  128.        386's and faster.
  129.   /A2  Advance Mode 2 - as with Advanced
  130.        mode (above), replaces all sounds.
  131.        If /A does not work, try this one.
  132.        The notes for /A (above) also apply
  133.        to this mode.
  134.   /R   Resident mode - When NuSound is run
  135.        with this option it will remain in
  136.        memory as a Terminate & Stay Resident
  137.        (TSR) program and replace the DOS
  138.        beep with the sound specified by
  139.        FILENAME (see above).  Note that only
  140.        the DOS beep is replaced. To replace
  141.        other sounds (such as sounds generated
  142.        within an application) you must also
  143.        use one of the /A options (above).
  144.   /Q   Quit, Uninstall and remove from
  145.        memory. (Use either /Q or /U)
  146.   /S:n Speed Selection. The value n is
  147.        a delay value, so larger n
  148.        values slow down the playback
  149.        rate. For example, a good value
  150.        for n for a 20Mhz 386 is about 70.
  151.        Generally, you should not need
  152.        to specify this value - NuSound
  153.        automatically determines the
  154.        speed of your PC and attempts to
  155.        set the standard playback speed.
  156.        However, if your PC seems to be
  157.        playing sounds too fast or slow,
  158.        try modifying this value.
  159.   /V:n Volume. The value n may be from 1-10.
  160.        The default is around 4.
  161.   /?   Display Help Screen.  Does not
  162.        install (i.e. does not remain
  163.        resident).

  167.                     When NuSound is Memory-Resident
  168.   Since NuSound is a memory-resident program (when invoked with
  169.   /R , see above) it will use up a small amount of your PC's
  170.   conventional memory.  The amount of memory used depends on the
  171.   size of the sound file loaded.  NuSound will occupy around 2K
  172.   plus the size of the sound file.  If, after loading NuSound, you
  173.   find that you cant't run an application for lack of DOS memory,
  174.   try using a smaller sound file.  Also note that if you want to
  175.   change a setting or use a different sound file, first unload
  176.   NuSound from memory and then reload with the new options.  If any
  177.   of the preceding jargon has thrown you for a loop - relax - just
  178.   find the nearest power user (there's one in every crowd) and ask
  179.   for help.  NOTE: You can also save DOS memory by loading NuSound
  180.   in 'high memory' using 386Max, QEMM386, or other similar program.

  183.                       Other People's Sound Files
  184.   Even though NuSound comes replete with a veritable plethora of
  185.   sounds, we know you may have some sound files of your own that
  186.   you would like to use with NuSound.  Generally, NuSound can
  187.   handle other types of sound files as long as they are 11Khz, 8-
  188.   bit unsigned, uncompressed data.  Whew! Now if you didn't
  189.   understand what we just said - forget about it! You'll be just
  190.   fine.

  193.                         Making Your PC Louder
  194.   NuSound is designed to playback real digitized sounds through
  195.   your PC's internal speaker - no extra hardware required!
  196.   Unfortunately, not all PC's are created equal.  If NuSound  is
  197.   not loud enough on your PC, a trip to your local Radio Shack can
  198.   remedy the problem.  You need:  1) the 'Mini-Amplifier-Speaker'
  199.   and  2) a cable with a 1/8" phone plug on one end (plugs into
  200.   Mini-Amp) and two 'alligator' clips on the other end.  Remove the
  201.   cover from your PC (feel free to ask your local 'power user' for
  202.   help) and locate the speaker (Boy, is it wimpy!).  Connect each
  203.   of the two alligator clips to the leads of the speaker.  You
  204.   should now be able play sounds and hear them through the 'Mini-
  205.   Amp'.  Reassemble your PC, place the 'Mini-Amp' in a convenient
  206.   spot, and adjust the volume to your taste.
  207.        NEWS FLASH - some cases, such as some mini-tower cases, bury
  208.   the speaker deep inside the case. In this case (pun intended)
  209.   you can pull the speaker out of the case (you may need to
  210.   'splice' some longer wire) and locate the speaker near you. With 
  211.   this technique, you don't need to spend any $$$.

  214.                           Microsoft Windows
  215.   Since NuSound runs under 'standard' DOS, it generally has no
  216.   effect in Windows unless, of course, you are running a DOS
  217.   window.
  218.        When running NuSound (either from the command line, batch
  219.   file, or as a TSR) from within a DOS window (that is not in 
  220.   exclusive, full-screen mode) you should probably specify the
  221.   playback speed explicitly with the /S option.
  222.        Since the sounds provided with NuSound are ".WAV" files,
  223.   you can use them from within Windows (using Windows drivers).
  224.   Some of the usual uses are linking different sounds to certain
  225.   system events, adding a voice annotation to a spreadsheet, etc.
  226.   See your Windows documentation for details.

  232.                       "Point-and-Shoot" Playback
  233.   We include a program called SETUP.EXE to let you easily view and
  234.   listen to the sounds.  From within your NuSound directory, type:
  235.                SETUP
  236.   and hit <Enter>.  (Please ignore the "Install" menu option. It's
  237.   intended for the diskette-based version.)  Select the "Choose a
  238.   Sound" option.  You should see a window showing the sound files.
  239.   Move the highlighted bar around with the cursor keys and hit
  240.   <Enter> the hear the highlighted sound. (Users with monochrome
  241.   screens may have to adjust the contrast and brightness to see the
  242.   highlight.) Exit at any time by pressing <Esc>.
  243.        If you are using NuSound in resident mode (to replace the
  244.   'beep') you can choose a different sound and have setup
  245.   automatically update your autoexec.bat file. From the "Choose a
  246.   Sound" option, find the sound you want, then hit <F10> to update
  247.   your autoexec.bat file with the new sound.

  249.                          QEMM-386 and 386Max
  250.   If you are using NuSound (in resident mode) with a memory manager
  251.   such as QEMM-386 or 386Max (and are loading NuSound into 'high'
  252.   memory), these programs typically specify a size for the resident
  253.   program. If you select a new sound to replace the beep at a later
  254.   point in time, NuSound's resident size will change (dependent on
  255.   the size of the sound file). Therefore, it may be necessary to
  256.   rerun the 'optimize' (optimize, maximize, etc.) program that came
  257.   with your memory manager. See your memory manager documentation
  258.   for details.
